Samenvatting

The Virtual Dutch Men is a company that creates 3D visualizations of real estate projects. Currently, they add window decorations as 2D images in the post-production phase. However, the company would like to add the window decorations in 3D, as this could offer a more flexible way of working and more realism to their visualizations.
The goal of this research is to find, create and test a new solution to decorating windows in 3D, and more specifically in the 3D software they use: 3DS Max. For this the following research question is formulated: How to reduce the time spent by 3D artists in the post-processing phase of artist impressions by developing a 3D solution to decorate windows in 3DS Max, and can be used with ease and minimal explanation?
To answer this question, three possibilities have been researched, WindowBox Shader, Forest Pack, and Railclone. Railclone, the most promising one, is used to create a pre-set with. The pre-set is tested by several of the company’s 3D artists, after which they are asked to fill out a survey. The survey shows that the pre-set indeed could be used with ease and minimal explanation. The survey also shows suggestions for improvements.
Based on this it is recommended that the pre-set, after processing the improvements, is used for decorating windows, since it will yield more realistic results and can save time when working on a building with a large number of windows.
