Samenvatting

This paper discusses the design of an additional interactive installation for the visitors of De Museumfabriek. De Museumfabriek has one of the first gasoline pumps in Enschede in their collection. However, the exhibition consist of just the gasoline pump, and no other information is given about the item. De Museumfabriek proposed to create an engaging digital interactive element that enhances visitor understanding of this historical item.
The development process followed the design thinking method and includes user testing with museum visitors aged 6 to 79. Key design decisions were informed by desk and field research, and feedback gathered through surveys. Based on this input, multiple iterations were made to improve usability and engagement.
Findings show that touchscreen interaction, paired with visual storytelling and short text, can successfully convey historical information and increase visitor engagement. While the current prototype is functional and well-received, future improvements such as adding sound, simplifying language, and additional content could further enhance the experience. Based on literature and test results, a revised iteration of the installation is proposed.
