Facilitate Conversations in Youth Health CareSamenvatting
This thesis explores the design and development of a customizable avatar system within Unity,
aimed at facilitating conversations between healthcare professionals and their clients regarding
family relations, mental health, and self-image in mental health facilities. Employing a multi-phase
research methodology that combines qualitative and quantitative methods, the study begins with a
comprehensive literature review of avatar customization, representation, and inclusion. A semi
structured interview with healthcare professionals provides insights into their needs and
preferences, while a survey evaluates the effects of stylization on appeal, recognition, eeriness, and
perceived age. The research identifies critical factors for avatar customization, emphasizing the
importance of inclusivity and representation across diverse demographic groups. Additionally,
observational testing at the Jeugd Centraal Conference and a final playtest with game development
experts offer valuable feedback on functionality and areas for future improvement. The findings
underscore the complexity of creating diverse customizable characters and propose
recommendations for enhancing inclusivity in avatar design. Overall, this study lays a strong
foundation for developing a functional avatar system that can meaningfully support therapeutic
conversations in mental health care settings.
