Environmental Storytelling as a Tool for Authentic Roma Representation in Video Games

This paper was written to explore the representation of Roma people in video games, with a focus on how environmental storytelling can be used as a tool to create inclusion. The paper begins by analyzing concepts such as the stereotypes of why people use them and how to create authentic representation, while also emphasizing the broader importance of diversity and visibility in digital media. In order to establish Roma people’s history, tradition, and lived experiences, desk research and interviews with people from the community were conducted. The research informs the creation of a fictive family that reflects the richness of the Roma identity. In addition, a variety of storytelling techniques were studied and applied to craft an engaging environment. The final prototype was developed and tested with both casual players and members of the Roma community in order to better understand the perspective and expectations of both groups. This project aims to demonstrate how thoughtful design and cultural research can be used to create a more inclusive game experience.
