Samenvatting

Humans, with some exceptions left and right, have proven to be at their best when disaster strikes hard. At least, that is our hope and appears to be our defence for the future. In the meantime, we hide and live our perfect lives in
the best conditions we ever had. Conditions that make us, lazy, fat, selfish, and even unaware.
We are in desperate need of a perfect storm, circumstances that people can no longer cope with on their own and brings them together again. Within the course ‘One hundred and thirty degree Fahrenheit’ we will create this perfect storm, that takes down all the fences and empowers the need of stronger community again.

This book is collection of essays produced by the students of the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. Set to the harsh and inhabitable background of the Death Valley, each essay researches a unique design strategy embracing the extreme conditions in the area and how to unlock their potential through architecture. Their collective work provides insight into the power of and resilience of designing with natural conditions rather than fighting them, resulting in a
contemporary take on vernacular design.
Essays by Leonardo Neil, Yohei Kanemitsu, Kay Nieuwenhoff, Yvette P. Hengeveld, Birant Evren, Ebru Güner, Max Witteveen, Joyce Bakker, Elizaveta Pramzina.
