The Vineyard of Brabance - the future of Dutch sparkling wine
The Vineyard of Brabance - the future of Dutch sparkling wine
Samenvatting
Wineries are not new in the Netherlands, but they still are mostly small scale and for this reason have separate locations for growing the vines and processing the grapes. This design project outlines a different scenario, where vacant agricultural plots are combined into a large whole and can support a unified winery plant. A location is found in the municipality of Bergeijk, which is agriculturally orientated but also faces transformation of existing farming. An extensive vineyard is created, with park-like lanes and forested borders. A linear plant occupies the slightly indented middle zone, where rainwater surpluses can be collected in reservoirs. The plant itself forms an elongated volume, where alternating open and closed sections reflect the successive steps in winemaking. Public functions are incorporated, as well as educational facilities and staff quarters. An articulated design language underlines the programs, which also form a route by themselves, but it no less underpins the goal of the project to showcase a new prospect for wineries in the near future.
