Rebirth of the Portico

Samenvatting

Heechterp-Schieringen is a neighborhood in the east of Leeuwarden, which gained notoriety by topping the ‘’40 districts of Vogelaar’’ list. It has been the poorest district of the Netherlands for five years now, resulting in a very negative image. A neighborhood characterized by poverty, societal problems, unemployment and relocations. The unemployed residents have no meaningful activities during the day which leads to crime, nuisance and pollution on the streets. Many call it the drain well of LWD. The core of the problems lies in the cheap housing supply of the district which mainly attracts the lower
segment, including many immigrants. The district also consists of many early post-war portico flats, which look dated and have the appearance of big closed boxes that are not particularly inviting or attractive for people. This leads to a high number of relocations per year. As a result of a jammed top-down urban development, a different approach is needed to give the development a boost
