Sense City

architecture as an interface between two worlds

Summary

Sense City is based on a study of environmental factors that could benefit people in the autistic spectrum to live on their own, in their own house or neighborhood, with their family or partner, individually or in a group. The project features several case studies houses, in different configurations, as part of a neighborhood. It makes a plea for the availability of this type of housing, to prevent isolation from their family and friends, or even hospitalization. The approach is twofold: elimination of disturbing factors in the daily environment of the homes and supporting or promoting social contacts and activities in a shared environment with direct neighbors or with others in facilities in the vicinity. Examples of architectural instruments are gradation in intensity in the environment, controlled overview, but also possibilities to change the surroundings according to need or wish.
