Housing crisis and a city full of space

redefining the voids of BredaSamenvatting
As a resident of Breda, Daan was intrigued by the many urban voids in the city. How can a city, full of such empty spaces, also have a shortage of areas to build housing? After researching Breda's urban voids, he noticed that these voids can be categorized according to the type of void (spatial, functional or social) and what has caused the void to occur. As the voids show such a variety in type, then why is the current practice mainly focusing on adding housing (densifying approach) and not adding needed functions (e.g. housing, green, energy and water, mobility) as mentioned in Breda's Environmental and Planning vision (omgevingvisie) and for the direct surrounding area, neighborhood or district (intensifying approach)? By testing, his intensifying approach at different scales (one void, multiple adjusted voids or all voids in a district level) Daan has shown that his developed approach not only results in a more vibrant neighborhood and a better-connected district, it also allows for developing new mixed typologies (e.g. energy hubs and housing).
