re-imagining utopiaSamenvatting
Drumul Taberei, a postwar modernist district of Bucharest, has a share in Romanian urban history with a start as a socialist high-rise utopia, subsequent densification in the ample green spaces under political repression and a downfall due to seismic threats. Through research the cultural and architectural memory concerning the past and present of this district is recovered and taken as a starting point for contextual renewal and an earthquake proof replacement of threatened estate. The design replaces a large, back-to-back apartments slab by an open city block, centered around a green courtyard. The diverse housing types, developed within seismic proof concrete and CLT structural frames, foster a community-based program reflected in a mixed-use program for the plinths and some of the terraced upper floors. Around the perimeter of the blocks the mixed program extends onto the city floor, making contact with the surrounding blocks and low-rises, like a medical center and a church precinct.
