Samenvatting

‘Begin Here, a mixed-use starters space in M4H district.’ Near the Marconi Towers and opposite the Marconi metro station this project envisions a mixed-use starters space on the scale of a large urban block. The middle part has a central square and forms a gate to the area beyond. Left and right of the square are public facilities, which also open to the two open courtyards in the wings of the block, forming an enfilade connected to the urban floor. Through the concept of green courtyards and surroundings the project promotes a green trail of similar spaces in the former industrial zone, humanizing the M4H district. The urban dimension is carried further in the mixed-use functionality of the entire block, arranged on a free floor plan applied on every floor, supplying labs and offices, accommodations and roof gardens with outdoor facilities to be used in equal measure by all occupants. As a prolific urban block, the project engages in a contextual dialogue with the fast-changing environment of the former docks area M4H in Rotterdam Mathenesse.
