Samenvatting

This report describes the development software of the Ship Monitoring and Management
system.

The Transport sector is one of the biggest sectors in the Netherlands. Products are
transported by road, rail and river. Most of the sectors in the transport sector try to reduce
the environmental footprint.

However the inland ship transport sector is less innovative compared to the freight truck
transport sector. This is partly because ship have a longer lifespan then trucks. Also the
inland ship transport sector is known for its conservative nature. Because the ships have
a longer live span the shipbuilders tend to choose for reliable but les innovative technical
designs. This means that the captain only roughly knows what the most efficient engine
speed is. Also the lubricating oil of the ship is changed based on the operation hours of the
engine not on the quality of the oil. This leads to a waste of oil and fuel and higher
maintenance on the engine.

Because of that the ships that transport goods these days have a big environmental
footprint. Also the fuel and oil cost for the ship owners are higher than the could be. An
system the measures the engine condition, the fuel consumption and the oil condition
could solve this problem.

This is where the SMMS project comes in. The goal of the SMMS project is to develop that
system. The goal of the thesis was to develop the software for the controllers that read the
sensors measuring the fuel consumption an oil condition. The controllers also had to read
the engine condition using a canbus J1939.

The following software components were developed during the thesis:
- Modules to manage the hardware of the controllers that have to read the sensors
and engine data
- Modules to read the sensors an calculate the value of the flowrate etc.
- Modules to calculate the fuel consumption

After that the foundation of the web application was developed. The web application can
read data that is send form the controllers and shod the data in text form. Also part of the
function to store data in the database was developed.

Before the final presentation the following modules will be finished
- Storing data in a database

Before the final presentation the following modules might be finished
- A fully functional web application
