Influence of climate change on transboundary water basin collaboration in Africa
Influence of climate change on transboundary water basin collaboration in Africa
Samenvatting
In this thesis it is investigated how climate change will influence
transboundary water collaboration in Africa. Transboundary water basins tie all African countries together, that is why all water management is in fact transboundary water management. Due to the fact that climate change is an extreme change, it can increase the risks for conflict in vulnerable areas in Africa. Areas especially vulnerable are areas with a low average GDP and high population density and basins with no or low institutional capacity to deal with change. The areas with a higher risk for conflict are situated in
the West and Eastern part of Africa. However, it does not entail that
conflict will happen in these areas. The second conclusion is that
collaboration is likely to increase in other areas with institutional
capacity, because the increasing number of global institutions in Africa are creating a basis for dialogue and thereby cooperation.
