Samenvatting

AkzoNobel is a multinational sustainable company which makes paints, coatings and special chemicals. Hexahydrophthalic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and trimellitic anhydride are dangerous chemicals, because they can cause irritations and allergic reactions. These chemicals are often used in paint and coatings. AkzoNobel also makes use of these chemicals. To be able to have the Ecolabel on the end product there has to be less than 0.01% hexahydrophthalic anhydride in it. Because AkzoNobel is a sustainable company they prefer to have an Ecolabel on their product. For phthalic anhydride and trimellitic anhydride this is not yet the case, but AkzoNobel expects this will come within a few years. In a previous study from AkzoNobel they couldn’t measure the right amount of hexahydrophthalic anhydride with GC-MS. That’s why this study is about the method development of determining residual anhydride monomers in polyester- and alkydresins with derivatization and LC-Q-TOF-MS.
The derivatization was done with dibutylamine and N-methyl-phenethylamine. To determine if the derivatizations workout well the reactions were measured by 13C-NMR. It turned out that the derivatization method by dibutylamine and by N-methyl-phenethylamine worked well at room temperature.
For the reaction products with dibutylamine an optimum gradient was found with the LC-Q-TOF-MS, but for the reaction products with N-methyl-phenethylamine there was no optimum gradient found with water and methanol. So the decision was made to proceed with dibutylamine. Also because the reaction product from dibutylamine where detectable with the UV-detector so the method can also be converted to a method for LC-UV for the other laboratories from AkzoNobel.
The determination by LC-Q-TOF-MS was done with internal standards and a standard addition method. The measured results were all under the norm of Ecolabel which is 0.01% (100 mg/L). This means that the method is well suited for AkzoNobels needs and is therefore regarded as successful.
