psychiatrie binnen Symfora groep.
This practical research focuses on the effects of music therapy on the closed acute psychiatric ward
within the Symfora group. The music therapy was started two years ago, within the framework of the
project Pressure & Force. It was set up to find alternatives for compulsory measures in psychiatry. Both
clients and nurses appreciate this music therapy very much. But does it really have any positive effect?
To answer that question I have interviewed and observed clients and nurses during music therapy. The
analysis of these data was accomplished with the aid of the Grounded Theory. This research will show to
what extend music therapy diminishes the use of separation and aggression on the ward, what effect
music therapy has on the contact between the clients and how it contributes to the forming of
groups/social bonds. It will also describe the effect of music therapy on the nursing staff. Music sets you
free, even on a closed ward!
