The comparative analysis of clay for dikes
The comparative analysis of clay for dikes
Samenvatting
The comparative analysis of clay properties is a crucial study in dike design, construction and maintenance. Understanding the properties of different clay covers and soil is essential for ensuring the stability and effectiveness of dike systems. This research analysis aims to provide valuable insights into the suitability and performance of various clay currently used in dike layers and local clay. The research question is answered through an extensive analysis using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The Multi-criteria Analysis quantitative method is adopted to assess the different criteria which were selected based on factors that contribute to the overall optimal use of clay in dike top layers in the region to ensure stability. These criteria include Sustainability, Quality, Cost, Availability and Maintainability. Adopted qualitative methods include analysis of the limitations and assumptions the use of reliable research data and renowned test methods in geotechnical engineering for information analysis. The test results and Multi-criteria analysis results indicated that local soil within the region is not just optimal but preferred in comparison to currently applied dike clay due to its excellent geotechnical properties, long and short-term cost-effectiveness and sustainability. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that local clay found within the region is suitable for application on dikes even while adhering to set dike design standards and regulations because it meets the requirements. Furthermore, Recommendations for future research in the field of dike construction are given which include the optimal method of application of local clay, areas for further testing, cost-effective practices and design recommendations. In general, this research study offers insightful information on the use of local clay on dike layers and how it compares to currently applied clay on dike layers.
