Quay wall fortification

A solution for the corrosion damage in Zijkanaal A in Terneuzen

Samenvatting

This document is the result of executing the final thesis about ‘a solution for the corrosion damage in Zijkanaal A in Terneuzen’. To attain the necessary competencies required for a positive result in this final thesis, Civil Engineering is heavily integrated into the ‘designing’ and ‘specifying’ aspects. Moreover, exploratory research and a stakeholder analysis is conducted for the ‘initiating and directing’ aspect.
The main research question is: ‘What is the most suitable method to fortify the heavily corroded sheet pile wall located in the Zijkanaal A in Terneuzen, accounting for the stakeholders, technical aspects, economic aspects, sustainability, and nautical aspects, to ensure that the targeted lifetime of 50 years can be achieved and possibly prolonged?’

Several sub-research questions are derived to dissect and answer the main research question. To answer these questions, information is gathered regarding the project area, content, condition of the construction, and the boundary conditions in the form of geotechnical and hydrological data. The research results will initially focus on an analysis of the current condition of the quay wall.
Through a visual inspection and measurements, the condition and remaining strength and thus remaining lifetime of the quay wall is calculated. Next, a variant study is performed dissecting and discussing different methods of extending the lifetime of the quay wall. A multi-criteria analysis in combination with a sensitivity analysis is used to determine the most suitable variant. Lastly, a detailed drawing is shown of the most suitable variant.

The condition analysis shows that in the current condition, the quay cannot fulfil the soil retaining function and thus has a remaining lifetime of 0 years. The impact of corrosion on the structural strength of the quay returned a remaining lifetime of 25 years. Three variants are compared: coating, concrete encasement, and a new quay wall. The multi-criteria analysis shows that concrete encasement is the most suitable method to ensure that the lifetime of 50 years is not only achieved but also extended by an additional 14 years.
