Adapting the weekly schedule at the Elderly Center in Sal Rei: Sustainable and culturally sensitive approaches to promote healthy aging

Adapting the weekly schedule at the Elderly Center in Sal Rei: Sustainable and culturally sensitive approaches to promote healthy aging

Samenvatting

Introduction
By 2050, the global population aged 60 and older is projected to more than double, underscoring the need for programs that promote healthy aging (World Health Organization (WHO), 2024). In Cabo Verde, the Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) program, implemented in 2021, emphasizes person-centered care to enhance physical and cognitive health among older adults (WHO, 2023). The elderly center in Sal Rei, established in 2015, offers activities to support healthy aging but faces resource limitations. This project addresses the research question: How can the weekly schedule at the elderly center in Sal Rei, Boa Vista, be adapted in a sustainable and culturally sensitive way to contribute to healthy aging of the elderly?

Objective
The objective of this project is to adapt a sustainable, culturally sensitive, and evidencebased activity schedule to better promote fall prevention, cognitive stimulation, and meaningful engagement through enjoyable participation. Methods A Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, guided by eight principles (Lieshout & Cardiff, 2021), was used. Data collection included semi-structured interviews, participatory observations, creative activities, focus groups, and literature research.

Results
Adapted table tennis, seated volleyball, and creative sessions were suitable for the elderly center in Sal Rei. Physical exercises were modified by incorporating weights.

Conclusion/discussion
The weekly schedule was adapted through co-creation with staff and literature research. Participants reported enjoyment in adapted table tennis and volleyball. These activities promote cognitive stimulation. However, the direct effects on fall prevention remain unclear. Further research is needed to evaluate the impact of adapted activities on healthy aging.
