This research paper was written in order of the diocesan Caritas association of the archdiocese Cologne.
The German Caritas association is the welfare association of the German Catholic Church. The diocesan Caritas association is an umbrella organization of the Caritas, which is responsible for the area of the archdiocese of Cologne.

The subject of this research paper is “Participation in the inpatient child an youth welfare”. The question “Which criteria do youth and their educators have for a positive participation climate in their institution?”, is to be answered.

It happens in the form of a multi-perspective, qualitative study using the example of two residential groups of the inpatient youth welfare. The research question is answered through literature research as well as guideline-based interviews with youth and their educators.
Bringing together different descriptive approaches from specialist literature, which deals with this topic, a classification and definition of the terms “Participation” and “Participation climate” takes place.
Based on the interviews, criteria for a positive participation climate are carved out.

A high attribution of significance of both groups of people, related to the participation is shown. Basic requirement on both sides is that participation has to be intended.
Certainly differences in the focus on the named criteria for a positive participation climate become apparent. The young mention particularly personal and social criteria. The focus of the mentioned criteria from the educators is also on the institutional framework and the culture of cooperation of the institution.

With the reply of the research question to the participating institutions, feedback could be given about their conditions for the participation of the young and which aspects are especially important for them. For other member-institutions of the diocesan Caritas association for the archdiocese of cologne these results can serve as enrichment in the discussion of times political level. The results are also useful in the specialist counseling of these members and the political lobbying.
