Use of grazing lawns by large herbivores

in the Compassberg Protected Environment, South Africa

Samenvatting

The Compassberg Protected Environment (CPE) in South-Africa suffers severely from erosion in the form of gullies. Herbivory, bare soil, little water capture and lack of vegetation are the most important factors that contribute to erosion in the CPE. Grazing lawns are a vegetation type that is only found in South-East Africa. Grazing lawns can combat erosion more efficiently than any other vegetation type in South-Africa, and counters all factors that contribute to erosion in the CPE.
