Creating Horror Atmosphere in Stylized Games.

Samenvatting

This report outlines the creation of a stylized horror environment for Shadows of Singraven, developed as part of a graduation project at Saxion University of Applied Sciences. The goal was to evoke an eerie atmosphere through historically inspired 15th–16th century scenes. The research explored how environmental composition, lighting, and texture quality contribute to horror aesthetics while maintaining visual fidelity. Two Unreal Engine 5 prototypes—a church ruin and a modular manor—were developed using lighting setups, material blending, and gameplay-aware layouts. A/B testing with pre-recorded footage revealed that lighting and texture quality most strongly influenced the perceived horror mood. The findings demonstrate that stylized horror spaces can effectively evoke tension through deliberate visual and spatial design.
