Motivating energy-conscious behaviour in dashboards for carbon-neutral communities
Samenvatting
Two carbon-neutral communities are looking at smart technical solutions to guarantee agreen energy transition with increasing proportions of local renewable energy. More efficientintegrated energy solutions for electricity, heat, water, waste, and transportationinfrastructure must be created to achieve this goal. Part of this larger project is the wish toprovide the inhabitants of these communities with an interactive dashboard to monitor theirenergy consumption. This thesis aimed to discover how energy-conscious behaviour can be encouraged andtriggered in inhabitants of a carbon-neutral community using an interactive dashboard. Therefore, the following research question is proposed: How can an interactive dashboardeffectively employ behaviour change interventions to encourage lasting energy-consciousbehaviour in the inhabitants of Aardehuis and Vriendenerf?State-of-the-art research, literature review, an online questionnaire and an in-person surveywith the target users jointly lead to an answer to the research question. The research determined that individual interventions are unlikely to be effective and that an integrated behavioural change system is required. This approach to behavioural changeincorporates personalised recommendations, normative feedback, social comparisons(gamification), consumption visualisation, daily general tips, goal setting, and an overview of savings. However, if current research is to be believed, it is unknown whether theinterventions will have the desired long-term impact.
