The design process of the Yellow Fire TruckSamenvatting
This research paper is about the design process of a product called the Yellow Fire Truck. At the HAN (auniversity of applied sciences) in Nijmegen, there is an organisation called the Centre for Creativity. Theirrecent focus is on producing a physical, interactive, curiosity-invoking vehicle that will be used for thestudies that are part of the Academy of People and Society (such as social work and pedagogy). TheHAN off ers a creative profi le within these studies and their goal is to further nurture the active use of creativityto come up with new, suitable and valuable solutions for each client. The concept itself was formedbefore the start of this assignment, which is why this paper focuses on the progress of the physical reaslisationof the Yellow Fire Truck. The process consisted of empathizing, sketching, modelling, refi ning andtexturing to come to the fi nal product. The fi nal product (the 3D models) were tested with the target group, showcasing the 3D models andasking for fi rst impressions and opinions. Besides that, some interactive elements have also been tested.Test candidates showcased positive initial impressions, with a consensus on the vehicle’s fun, creativedesign. Colour feedback varied, with the yellow version being the slightly more preferred option, howevera middleground between the two version was suggested the most. Interaction preferences varied amongcandidates, showing no clear consensus. While the YFT design sparks curiosity and attention, some elements, like its recognizability as a fi re truck, require further testing for added reliability. On the whole, thefi nal product seems to have met its needs and expectation in regards to the design.
