The effect of two different algae and probiotic treatments during the conditioning of O. edulis broodstockSamenvatting
This paper researches the effect of two different algae and probiotic treatments as well as a new photonic schedule on O. edulis broodstock with the purpose of determining the best way of conditioning the broodstock among the treatments tested. This was done by answering the research question: What is the effect of conditioning O. edulis broodstock with different diets, probiotics and an increased photonic schedule on the quality, quantity growth rate and mortality of O. edulis larvae?
The diets tested were diet A: of Skeletonema costatum/Isochrysis galbana/Chaetoceros muelleri/Rhodomonas salina/Tetraselmis suecica/Pavlova lutheri/ Thalassiosira weissflogii prepared the larvae better compared to diet B: Chaetoceros muelleri/Rhodomonas salina/Tetraselmis suecica.
Diet A prepared the larvae better once they were released based on the increased growth rate. The probiotics tested were PRO-W and MIC-F. Based on the number of larvae PRO-W seems to have had a negative effect on the broodstock. MIC-F had the highest number of larvae, which indicates a positive effect of the probiotic on the broodstock. Compared to previous years the broodstock mortality was low which can most likely partly be attributed to the increased photonic regime. The results of this research will be used by Roem van Yerseke to plan further trials.
