Samenvatting

Research Problem: Teaching composition has evolved from focusing on traditional craftsmanship to a more open approach. The shift in teaching methodology emphasises developing personal musical language alongside technical skills, challenging the traditional notion of mastering specific techniques first. While timeless principles of composition remain relevant, the pedagogical approach has shifted towards fostering creativity and individuality. This artistic research examines how teachers can guide composition students amidst an era of limitless artistic expression.

Research Question: What are the guidelines for teaching composition in the 21st century?

Method: For my research, I adopted a qualitative approach to data collection to explore perspectives on teaching composition in the 21st century. I conducted in-depth interviews with diverse composers to gather multifaceted data. The study included composers such as Vykintas Baltakas, Michael Daugherty, Detlev Glanert, Vincent Ho, Han Lash, James MacMillan, Piet Swerts, and Bart Visman, with each interview recorded, transcribed, and reviewed by the interviewees. Coding was used to analyse the data and identify core categories, following a constant comparative method. The research design emphasises thick description to provide contextual depth, offering a comprehensive qualitative investigation into composition education guidelines.

Results: This study presents findings based on collected data from interview transcripts and references coded, resulting in guidelines for institutions and pedagogical strategies covering principles for critical judgment, historical context, institutional improvements, software use, electronic and film music, career advice, ear training, orchestration, acoustics, analysis, notation, and diversity in teaching approaches, along with providing guidance, developing a personal musical voice, and fostering creativity. Emphasis is placed on integrating media composition, practical collaborations, and stylistic diversity in curricula.
