Due to the growing availability of huge amounts of data of different types and the growing capabilities to analyze these data, the expectations of big data applications are high. In this paper, we argue that the usability of big data in the social domain is far from trivial. If the outcomes of big data …

Many attempts have been made to build an artificial brain. This paper aims to contribute to the conceptualization of an artificial learning system that functionally resembles an organic brain in a number of important neuropsychological aspects. Probably the techniques (algorithms) required are already …

Over the past decade, a growing number of artists and critical practitioners have become engaged with algorithms. This artistic engagement has resulted in algorithmic theatre, bot art, and algorithmic media and performance art of various kinds that thematise the dissemination and deployment of algorithms …

Aircraft require significant quantities of fuel in order to generate the power required to sustain a flight. Burning this fuel causes the release of polluting particles to the atmosphere and constitutes a direct cost attributed to fuel consumption. The optimization of various aircraft operations in different …

Gepubliceerd in Mikroniek, nr. 6 2018 In manufacturing environments where collaborative robots are employed, conventional computer vision algorithms have trouble in the robust localisation and detection of products due to changing illumination conditions and shadows caused by a human sharing the …

Human prejudices reemerge in algorithmic cultures allegedly devised to be blind to them. Algorithmic identity politics reinstate old forms of social segregation—in a digital world, identity politics is pattern discrimination. It is by recognizing patterns in input data that artificial intelligence algorithms …

The term “autonomy” comes from the Greek roots “autos” and “nomos”, which mean “self” and “law” respectively. This survey paper investigates the concept of autonomy in connection with the development of cyber-physical systems. The concept of autonomy refers to a form of self-regulation or self-government …

How do “human” prejudices reemerge in algorithmic cultures allegedly devised to be blind to them? To answer this question, this book investigates a fundamental axiom in computer science: pattern discrimination. By imposing identity on input data, in order to filter—that is, to discriminate—signals from …

This online STS muhabbet, friendly but critically engaging conversation that took place between Yetiskin and Lovink will walk you through the stages of identifying the problems, threats, and possibilities that media technologies have brought to the table of not only users but also social science researchers …

Background A valuable opportunity for reducing the fall incidence in hospitals, is alerting nurses when a patient is about to fall. For such a fall prevention system, more knowledge is needed on what occurs right before a fall. This can be achieved with a stereo camera that automatically detects (and …
