Inclusive education resource classroom in Nepal: the importance of playing materials for children with development difficulties
Samenvatting
This project focuses on addressing the needs of children with disabilities in Nepal through an occupational therapy perspective within the Inclusive Education Resource Classroom (IERC) established by SAMA Nepal. These classrooms provide resources, primarily in the form of playing material, but teachers often lack familiarity with how to use these materials effectively to support the child’s development. To address this gap, the project employed a participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, supported by the KAWA model, which emphasizes the importance of cultural relevance and a holistic view of a child’s development in relation to their environment.
Various data collection methods were utilized, including observations, interviews and informal conversation with involved ones. These methods provided insight into the challenges faced by teachers. The gathered data was discussed and reflected upon in collaboration with the teaching community and partners, which ensures these findings are rooted in the needs and perspectives of the community.
The results of this study led to practical, immediate changes. To support to the development of Nepali children in the IERC, a manual was created to guide teachers on screening, practice and report writing. During trainings, knowledge was leveraged by incorporating artificial intelligence tools to identify objects in the classrooms and evaluate their potential contributions to various developmental domains of children. This innovation facilitated the creation of specific strategies for utilizing materials in meaningful ways. Input from the teaching community addressed resource gaps, leading to recommendations for new resources and growth opportunities.
