Some people are better at looking at things from a wider perspective than others – they can think outside the box. Individuals, companies and organizations strive for continuity to provide basic safety. Innovation is crucial to survive in the modern world. Sometimes we need to be quick and exploit new opportunities when we see them.Towards explorative spaceIt can be argued that many potentialities within society are left unused by organising spaces (including incubators) based on modern planning practices. These planning practises regard space as predictable and manageable. By applying modern management principles to spaces, an important function of spaces can be easily overlooked and that is that spaces can be regarded as spaces which provide ‘difference’. This difference in spaces entails for example that space gives an opportunity to experiment with different futures, or perhaps towards inclusiveness. Understood in this context as “the quality of including all sections of society”. Modern planning practices often have the tendency to exclude sections of society. This requires reconsideration when entering a smart world! Dr. Alexander Grit, professor Entrepreneurship in transition from the Alfa-college and Hanze University of Applied sciences Groningen argues that facilitators (organizers) of space are in need of tools which allow them open up space and enhance entrepreneurial mindset. The professorship has developed two concepts which potentially open up space to difference and inclusiveness. The first tool is the training Host at the serendipity table whereby a host trained to facilitate a process of finding the unexpected within a group setting. The second tool is the training becoming a critical friend which provides a framework for asking the right questions and dialog.
