Inclusive community development Herenboeren
research reportInclusive community development Herenboeren
research reportSamenvatting
Current food system challenges such as the gap between farmers, consumer, and food production, have caused alternative agriculture initiatives such as community supported agriculture (CSA) to rise. Herenboeren is a CSA initiative that aims to give local communities back their food sovereignty while producing in a sustainable manner. Like many CSA initiative, Herenboeren struggles to become more socially inclusive as its current members are mainly middle-aged, natively Dutch people with an average to high income. However, to make as much impact as possible on food system transformation, Herenboeren wants its communities to be diverse and inclusive. Herenboeren believes that a sustainable, just, and inclusive food system can only be reached when all societal groups are included in initiatives such as Herenboeren. Through expert interviews, field visits and literature research on the organizational and identity characteristics of Herenboeren communities were identified. This was compared to two external CSAs that already have more focus on social inclusion to see how Herenboeren could learn from these communities to answer the research question ‘How could community development within Herenboeren CSAs become more inclusive and diverse?’. community development
