How do employees of Koninklijke Bibliotheek perceive library digitisation in relation to human sustainability within their organisation
Samenvatting
Heritage organizations, particularly libraries, prioritize digitization as part of the global Digital Transformation for preservation and accessibility. However, this focus can sometimes overshadow Human Sustainability, which is crucial for preserving and enhancing human resources within the organization. Human Sustainability directly influences organizational culture and team cohesion, fostering a more adaptable and resilient organization that is better equipped to face future challenges and opportunities in the digital age.
This research investigates employee perceptions of Human Sustainability at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek during its active digitisation efforts. Using a mixed-method approach—combining desk research, participant observation, and nine semi-structured interviews with both top and operational management—the study identifies four key categories reflecting employees' views on digitization and its impact on job satisfaction and organizational identity.
While digital projects are generally well-recognized, it is essential to clearly communicate the library's core values and the specific benefits of digitization for individual roles to strengthen organizational identification among staff. Additionally, to enhance psychological empowerment, employees should be more actively involved in cross-departmental projects. Clear communication of the factors influencing decision-making is also critical to minimizing misunderstandings and fostering a positive work environment.
This research provides valuable insights into strategies for integrating technology in libraries while maintaining Human Sustainability. It advocates for consistent attention to employee needs and feedback to ensure balanced communication and reduce potential tensions.
