Study Delay: Risks and Remedies at the academy for Safety and Security Management in Breda
Samenvatting
Since study delay is a major concern for the academy’s management, this research has been conducted to find out: What are the main risk factors which contribute to study delay and dropout for students at Safety and Security Management in Breda (IVK-B) and which action can be taken to prevent or reduce these?.
Based on scientific literature, this qualitative study comprised of various research strategies, namely a questionnaire among students in year two, interviews with delayed students, interviews with staff, expert interviews out with IVK-B, and a panel discussion with relevant stakeholders.
Departing from motivation as the main influenceable factor for study success, the main findings were on the one hand that various risks may threaten the motivation while, on the other hand, coaching practice may effectively intervene, restoring motivation and countering study delay.
Recommended improvements mainly concerned the coaching process. The coaching strategy, organisation and communication as well as the coaching content can all be improved to increase the sense of belonging of students and decrease stress. These recommendations include supervised peer to peer coaching among staff and IVK-B students.
