Designing a modular welding support for translas fume extraction torches

Samenvatting

This project aimed to develop and design a welding support that reduces the peak torque load on the wrist to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and allow workers to live and work longer, better, and healthier. To achieve this within twenty weeks, the Technology Readiness Level and the method of the Harris Profile were used to systematically come to a solution.
Research was conducted to observe and calculate when and where problems arise when using Translas fume extraction torches. Concepts were created by making a functional analysis and a morphological map. This provided several design directions that translated into the concepts. There were regular meetings with Translas and Skelex to discuss ideas, concepts, and the progress of the project in general. The ambition was to develop a prototype of TRL 7, which meant proving the function of the device in a simulated environment. The goal was set at TRL 6. Unfortunately, the test needed to reach TRL 7 was unable to be executed as a consequence of not finding the necessary test subjects within the allotted time. Nevertheless, a test plan has been provided for the companies or students who resume this project to execute. The objectives formulated were achieved. Before the product can be sold as such, steps need to be taken to bring it to TRL 9. Talks with Translas and Skelex are still ongoing about the direct future of the device.
