Threatened values and the definition of an oathSamenvatting
This thesis researches the values threatened due to data and AI development and application in the
Netherlands. This is related to what should be written in an oath for the Dutch data professional to
promote these values and lower the threat to these values.
Following the Design Science Methodology and combining a scientific literature review, multivocal
literature review, and a focus group the values threatened through the use of data and AI are
identified and a concise definition for an oath is constructed which can be combined to create an oath
for the Dutch Data Professional.
In this research, 11 values are found that are threatened by applications of data and AI. These can be
summarized in eight values relevant for data professionals to promote and keep in mind when
working with data and AI.
Lastly, a singular definition for the oath is presented as: “an act of a binding general commitment with
heavy moral weight not easily dissolved, taken voluntarily to be heard by multiple witnesses, with no
specific counterparty on the receiving end to accept the oath, during a ceremony and written down
where the oath-taker, by signing the oath cedes their authority over their actions and acknowledging
to continuously uphold a certain behavior or attitude.”
