ESHA headstart : guidelines for school leaders # 7: stimulating collective efficacy

Samenvatting

This ESHA’s quality cards series HEADstart - also in Dutch - aims to help school heads with useful professional tips on how to develop and become better leaders of their teams.
This guide explores how school leaders can foster collective self-efficacy among teachers to improve student learning. Research shows that collective self-efficacy — a shared belief among teachers that they can achieve their goals together — is the most significant factor influencing student success, surpassing socioeconomic background and prior achievement.
Why is Collective Self-Efficacy Important?
When teachers believe in their collective ability, they are more open to professional development, willing to adopt new teaching methods, and maintain high but realistic expectations for students. This positively impacts students’ self-confidence, autonomy, and behavior. A strong sense of trust among teachers, students, parents, and school leaders fosters a culture of shared responsibility and collaboration.
How to Develop Collective Self-Efficacy?
Set Goals Together – When teachers participate in goal-setting, they are more committed to achieving them. Clear goals provide focus, enhance student learning outcomes, and boost teacher motivation.
Encourage Professional Growth – Teachers gain confidence through successful experiences. Reflecting on what skills, knowledge, and strategies contribute to success strengthens collective wisdom. Continuous learning, experimentation with new teaching strategies, and peer support are essential.
Stimulate Collaboration – Teachers learn best from their peers. A psychologically safe environment where teachers feel comfortable sharing experiences and challenges is crucial. Collaboration can occur within schools or through networks with other schools. Joint lesson planning and professional learning communities can enhance collective problem-solving and responsibility for student success.
Provide Individual Support – Teachers are more willing to try new strategies when they feel supported by school leaders. Acknowledging their emotions, encouraging a growth mindset, and fostering a culture where mistakes are part of learning help teachers feel secure in their professional development.
