SAMENVATTING Achtergrond en doel Volgens meerdere onderzoekers is er momenteel weer een derde psychedelische golf gaande en in steeds meer buitenlandse publicaties van wetenschappers klinkt het pleidooi om psychedelica serieus te nemen in de medische en therapeutische praktijk. Hier komt in Nederland Stichting OPEN om de hoek kijken. Stichting OPEN is een interdisciplinair initia-tief dat wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar psychedelica wil stimuleren. De Stichting consta-teert dat er genoeg onderzoek in het buitenland wordt gedaan naar psychedelica als thera-peutisch middel, maar nauwelijks in Nederland. Om de reden hiervoor te vinden, is in kaart gebracht hoe hier in de Nederlandse medische wetenschap over wordt gedacht. Door mid-del van de resultaten van dit onderzoek, kan er wellicht een oplossing worden gevonden voor datgene wat de wetenschap hier nu nog in remt. Thema’s Via deskresearch is onder andere de geschiedenis van psychedelische therapie in het bui-tenland en in Nederland achterhaald. Ook wordt er beschreven welke verschillende soorten psychedelica er momenteel in de belangstelling staan en welke effecten hiervan zijn onder-zocht. Verder wordt er een vergelijking gemaakt met de mate waarin psychedelische thera-pie in de medische wetenschap in het buitenland wordt toegepast en welke gedachten er daar over zijn. Ten slotte is er dankzij de afgenomen interviews met medici via fieldresearch geconcludeerd hoe er in de Nederlandse medische wetenschap zelf wordt gedacht over de inzet van psychedelica als therapeutisch middel. Resultaten Eén van de meest genoemde redenen voor de geringe interesse in onderzoek naar psyche-delica als therapeutisch middel ligt bij de financiering. De belangen van de farmaceutische industrie bij het niet - stimuleren van onderzoek naar psychedelica worden sterk aangekaart als reden nummer één. In het buitenland worden de onderzoeken vanuit privéfondsen gefi-nancierd en in Nederland is dit niet het geval. Daarnaast zijn vrijwel alle medici het er mee eens dat er een negatief imago rondom psychedelica hangt vanuit de gehele maatschappij. Ook de rol van de media in het gevormde imago van psychedelica is van groot belang en de onderzoeksperiode van professor Bastiaans met LSD heeft het imago voor veel medici zelf aangetast. Daarnaast zijn vrijwel alle medici het erover eens dat medisch - wetenschappe-lijke artikelen over psychedelica een belangrijk aandeel hebben in het vormen van een me-ning erover. In Nederland zijn deze artikelen er dus nog niet, omdat er nog geen grote on-derzoeken naar psychedelica zijn. De genoemde risico’s, factoren en effecten die van be-lang zijn bij het toepassen van psychedelische therapie, lopen verder uiteen. Er wordt onder andere genoemd dat psychedelica niet voor iedereen zijn. Bijvoorbeeld niet voor mensen met een zware psychiatrische diagnose als: zwaar psychotisch, manisch depressief en schizofreen. Ten slotte weerhoudt het onvoorspelbare karakter van de werking van (bepaal-de) psychedelica zowel medici als patiënten ervan om open te staan voor de therapeutische toepassing ervan. SUMMARY Background & purpose Currently there’s a third psychedelic wave going on, according to a fair amount of research-ers. More and more foreign scientific papers point out the importance of taking psychedelics more serious in their medical and therapeutical applications. That’s where the OPEN Foun-dation comes in. The OPEN Foundation is an interdisciplinary initiative, seeking to stimulate scientific research in psychedelics. The foundation concludes enough research in psyche-delics is being conducted abroad, but hardly in the Netherlands (2015). To explore the rea-son for this, the thoughts of Dutch scientific researchers on this matter are mapped. By means of the results of my research, perhaps a solution can be found in the obstacles re-stricting science nowadays. Themes Through deskresearch the history of psychedelic therapy has been traced. Furthermore, the different kinds of psychedelics scientists are recently focusing on will be described, as well as their effects. Next to that, there will be an international comparison as to which extent psychedelic therapy in the scientific community is being applied and which believes there are on the subject. To end with, due to the conducted interviews with scientific researchers, the leading opinions in the Dutch scientific community about the application of psychedelics for therapeutical use will be expounded. Results One of the most common causes of the small interest in research in the therapeutical use of psychedelics in the scientific community is to be found in the funding. The interests of the pharmaceutical industry in not promoting research in psychedelics, has been mentioned as number one cause. Research abroad is being funded by private resources, which isn’t the case in the Netherlands. Next to that, nearly all scientist agree psychedelics have a negative image in society. The media’s role in the existing image of psychedelics also plays an im-portant role and ‘professor Bastiaans period’ with research in LSD blighted the image for scientists themselves. Besides, nearly all scientists agree with the importance of medical scientific articles in shaping an opinion. Whilst there are no Dutch articles yet, because there are no big researches in psychedelics in the Netherlands. The mentioned risks, factors and effects which are of importance in practicing psychedelic therapy, differ greatly from one another. Amongst other things, some scientists agree psychedelics aren’t for everyone. There are certain groups at risk, like people with a heavy psychiatric diagnosis like: deeply psychotic, manic depressive and schizophrenic. Finally, the unforeseeable nature of the effect of (certain) psychedelics retains scientists as well as patients to be amenable to the therapeutical application.
