research justification reportSamenvatting
This study explores the perceptions of young people in Gitega, Burundi, regarding gendernorms and intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW), comparing in particularyoung people from Abatangamuco households with those from non-Abatangamucohouseholds. The Abatangamuco movement, a local initiative promoting gender equalityand non-violence, has helped transform attitudes within rural communities in Burundi. However, little is known about how these changes in adult behaviour influence theyounger generation. This study aims to determine whether the movement's principles arebeing passed on to young people, which could break the intergenerational cycle ofviolence and encourage the adoption of healthier gender norms. Using focus groupdiscussions and semi-structured interviews, this research examines young people'sattitudes and behaviours, looking at their views on masculinity, femininity, gender roles, power, control and violence against women. The results of this study helped to betterunderstand the impact of the movement and provide guidance for future interventions bythe Abatangamuco organization, particularly in addressing the needs of young peoplewithin these communities.
