Samenvatting

This international joint research group (IJRG) Movement-Related impairment in Ageing, in short ‘Move in Age’, is an initiative of the Frailty in Ageing research group (FRIA) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), the department of General Practice and Elderly Care Medicine of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and the Research Group Healthy Ageing, Allied Health Care and Nursing of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen (HUAS). This initiative emerged from the PhD project on paratonia and Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGE’s) of Hans Drenth. The IJRG will allow a comprehensive and inter-disciplinary approach of movement impairments at higher age. In the first 3-5 years, the focus will be on the movement-related impairments that occur in patients with dementia. The program will be extended towards movement-related impairments in the context of other geriatric syndromes .The first research line will be focused on untangling the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, it consequences in functional decline and the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies to counter paratonia in patients with Alzheimer’s dementia. To enrich the discussion and ideas on this topic we decided to kick-start this research line with an invitational expert inspirational day on March 14th 2018 in Brussel (Belgium)
