In this study the quality of images in geography educational methods in Dutch primary school education are researched and identified. The methods were selected through convenience sampling. Selected through this sample process three methods were used to examine the quality of the images. First the images of the groep 8 (6th grade) geography textbooks were divided into categories which were chosen based on relevant literature. The following categories were used: Decoration, Representation, Organization and Interpretation. After the images were classified into categories, a coding scheme was used for the analyses of the images. The coding scheme gives the required quality.
The most common images used in the three geography educational methods, belonged to the category Representation. The category Decoration is excluded from the analysis because of the decorative purpose of the images in this category, the quality of the images is not relevant. After analyzing the three remaining categories, the images assigned to the category Representation have shown the lowest average quality in comparison to the other two categories. The images in the remaining two categories (Organization and Interpretation) were equal of quality.
Based on the results of this research, the following conclusions can be drawn about the quality of the images. Overall the images used in the studied geography educational methods were of high quality. Although there occurs to be a different between three of the in this study described categories
