Social Impact Evaluation Report: Audience Feedback on the 5th of May Rijksmuseum ‘Vrijheidsmaaltijd’ Connection Through Dialogue Extra Programming
Samenvatting
This research evaluates the social impact of the Vrijheidsmaaltijd (Freedom Meal) event, part of the Rijksmuseum’s Verbinding Door Dialoog (Connection Through Dialogue) Extra Programming initiative, which seeks to enhance audience engagement and inclusivity through dialogue on complex societal topics, including World War II and the concept of freedom. Conducted on May 5, 2024, in collaboration with 4en5 mei Amsterdam, the study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data from pre- and post-event surveys to assess participants' experiences, perceptions, and the event's overall impact.
The findings indicate that the Vrijheidsmaaltijd event effectively promoted a high level of connection among participants, particularly within the 26-60 age group, fostering meaningful personal interactions. However, the depth of dialogue on the difficult topics of WWII and freedom varied, with some participants struggling to engage deeply with these complex themes. Despite this, the event contributed positively to raising understanding and awareness of these topics, although engagement levels were inconsistent, particularly among younger and non-Dutch participants.
The study highlights the need for more structured support, such as pre-event educational materials, facilitated discussions, and targeted outreach, to ensure that all participants can fully engage with and comprehend the challenging narratives. These insights inform recommendations for future programming under the Verbinding Door Dialoog initiative, emphasising the importance of balancing social connection with deep, inclusive dialogue on difficult historical topics, while incorporating ongoing feedback mechanisms to enhance the museum's societal impact.
